This arrangement with organ was prepared by the composer for a performance during the wedding of his son, Daniel to Kate in 1990.

Commissioned by the BBC and dedicated to the composer’s father. The Elegy was written upon the death of his mother. First performed at the Cheltenham Festival of British Contemporary Music on July 15, 1957 and broadcast on BBC. Recorded by Toronto Wind Quintet and Harp.
This work is in six fairly short movements since the composer felt that lengthier movements would have been less appropriate to this particular occasion.
1. Invention, leading to
2. Intermezzo
3. Toccata
4. Elegy
5. Passacaglia al minuetto
6. Finale
Nos. 1, 3 and 6 are thematically connected. No. 4 is scored for Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn and Harp. No. 5 for Oboe, Flute, Horn and Harp. Throughout the composer has attempted to write music that observes very specifically the characteristics and sonorities which the instruments in question, and only these instruments, can provide.
